The Nursery was closed from the beginning of the year until March
owing to reconstruction and renovation. In accordance with the
structions of the Ministry of Health, the daily number of children now
received is limited to 20.
The health of the Nursery has been remarkably good, and no case of
infectious illness occurred during the year. Dr. Winifred Gray is Medical
Officer to the Nursery and makes a fortnightly inspection of the children.
PUERPERAL FEVER AND PUERPERAL PYREXIA.
Two cases of Puerperal Fever and five cases of Puerperal Pyrexia
were notified during the year. Of these six were treated in hospital
There were three deaths.
PREGNANCY AND CHILDBIRTH.
Four deaths associated with complications in childbirth occurred during
the year. Of these, one death followed operation for ectopic gestation.
Two deaths were due to pulmonary embolus during labour. The fourth
case died from severe eclampsia.
MATERNAL MORTALITY.
The following table shows the Maternal mortality in Chelsea during
the past two years.
