The provisions of the Public Health (Meat) Regulations, 1924,
have been brought to the notice of the occupiers of these slaughterhouses,
and no contravention of the Regulations in regard to
slaughterhouses were reported during the year.
Butchers' Shops.
The number of butchers' shops in the Borough at the beginning
of the year 1927 was 95. Four new shops were opened during the
year and one closed, making a total of 98 butchers' premises carrying
on business at the end of the year.
All butchers' shops in the Borough are systematically inspected,
and, in the main, they are well kept and provided with cold storage
facilities. During the year 1,294 inspections of these premises were
carried out by the Council's Food Inspector.
Public Health (Meat) Regulations, 1924.
During the year contraventions of the provisions of the above
named Regulations, mainly relating to the failure to protect meat
exposed for sale from contamination by dust, etc., were reported
in 11 cases. In only 1 of these was it found necessary to institute
legal proceedings to enforce the requirements of the Regulations
and in that case the proceedings were not complete at the end of
the year.
Sale of Food and Drugs Acts.
The total number of samples taken under the Acts during 1927
was 950, of which 43 or 4.5 per cent. were certified by the Public
Analyst to be adulterated. In addition to the foregoing, 250
informal samples were procured, of which 2 (or 0.8 per cent.)
were reported by the Public Analyst as containing preservative.

The percentage of samples reported by the Public Analyst to be adulterated during the 5 years 1922-26, and in 1927, was as follows:—
