INSPECTION AND SUPERVISION OF
FOOD AND FOOD PREMISES.
Provision of a Safe Milk Supply.
The Milk Marketing Board is responsible for the supply of
milk in the Borough. The bulk of the milk supplied is pasteurised,
but for part of the year under review raw milk continued
to be sold to families living in the vicinity of the cowhouse which
is licensed for 53 cows.
It was the practice for the Sampling Officer to obtain samples
of raw milk from the cows in this cowshed and submit them for
biological testing for the detection of tubercle bacilli. During
1950, 49 samples were taken for this purpose, and one was
found to contain tubercle bacilli. A Notice was therefore
served on the proprietor of the cowhouse under the provisions
of the Pood and Drugs Act, 1938, and the Milk and Dairies
Regulations, 1949, prohibiting the sale of raw milk for human
consumption from the premises in question until such milk had
been heat treated. This Notice was served on the 23rd September,
1950, and was not withdrawn until the 10th November,
when the proprietor decided to arrange for all milk from his
cows to be heat treated and to sell only heat treated milk at his
premises.

The following table shows the number of premises on the Dairies and Milkshops Register at the end of the year:— Dairies and Milkshops Register.
