[Report of the Medical Officer of Health for Camberwell.

Twenty-five houses were rendered fit, 10 by informal
action, 9 by owners following formal notice and 6 by the Council
in default of the owners.
Individual Unfit Houses not capable of being rendered fit at
reasonable expense.
During the year, 7 representations were made in respect of
houses which were not capable of being rendered fit at reasonable
expense. Demolition Orders were made in respect of 8 houses
and 8 undertakings by owners to render houses fit for habitation
were accepted. Five houses were rendered fit by owners
following undertakings to repair. Seven houses were demolished
as a result of action taken in accordance with the provisions of
the Housing Acts, including one which was dealt with by the
Council in default of the owner.
Parts of buildings used as dwellings not capable of
being rendered fit at reasonable expense.
Five parts of buildings were represented as unfit for human
habitation and not capable at reasonable expense of being
rendered so fit. Five Closing Orders were made by the Council
and in 2 instances undertakings were accepted from the owners
not to use the parts of premises concerned for human habitation.
Underground Rooms.
Representations were made to the Council in respect of 32
underground rooms involving 21 houses. The Council made
Closing Orders in respect of 26 rooms.
Overcrowding.
Three-hundred and thirty-six cases of overcrowding came
to the notice of the Public Health Department during the year.
Three-hundred and thirty-two certificates of overcrowding were
forwarded to the Director of Housing and Valuer, London
County Council, following a visit of enquiry by the Sanitary
Inspector. This Council's Housing Department was also
notified of the circumstances of each overcrowded family.
Two-hundred and fifty overcrowded families were provided
with suitable housing accommodation during the year, 181 by
the London County Council and 69 by this Authority.
In one instance the owner/occupier of a house had sub-let
the rooms in such a manner as to cause overcrowding of his
own family and two other families in the premises. This matter
