SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE
AREA.
Water Supply.
The domestic water supply for every dwelling house in the
Borough is provided from the mains of the Metropolitan Water
Board. The water from the seven wells in operation in the
Borough is used only for industrial purposes.
Water Certificates.
During the year, Water Certificates were issued under the
provisions of the Public Health (London) Act, 1936, in respect
of 559 new dwellings.
Drainage and Sewerage.
The length of sewers reconstructed during 1950 amounted
to 315 yards. Twenty-seven brick road gullies were replaced
by pot gullies, and 5 defective pot gullies were renewed.
One hundred and sixty-two drainage plans for new and
existing buildings were submitted for examination and approval.
Public Cleansing.
The following particulars have been kindly furnished by the
Borough Engineer and Surveyor, who is responsible for the
operation of this service.
Amount of house refuse
(including salvage and
kitchen waste) collected
during the year 43,449 tons.
Method of disposal Rmoved by barges from Honduras
Wharf, Bankside, to a controlled
tip.
Frequency of collection Weekly from dwelling houses and
twice weekly from blocks of flats
and tenements.
Smoke Abatement.
Complaints of alleged nuisances caused by the emission of
smoke, etc., numbered 30, and 58 observations were kept by
the district sanitary inspectors.
In the early part of the year, following complaints of the
emission of smoke and grit from the Gas Works in Old Kent
Road, an investigation was carried out by the Deputy Chief
