It is significant that only 219 applications were refused, owing
to the incomes, less rent, fares and insurances, divided by the number
in the family exceeding the basic figure allowed per head.
At the end of the year the Council adopted the revised scale
of income suggested by the Ministry of Health regulating the supply
of milk, which provides an income figure per head after the deduction
of rent.

For comparative purposes the original and revised income scales are set out hereunder. Original Scale.

Convalescent Treatment.
The Ministry of Health grant is available for approved expenditure
for the convalescent treatment of mothers for recovery after
confinement, and for some conditions in young children. During
the period covered by this report 18 children, 2 mothers, and 3
mothers with their infants were sent to a convalescent home for
a period usually extending to 28 days.
Midwives' Fees.
After due consideration by the Maternity and Child Welfare
Committee payment was authorised in three instances of the
accounts of midwives for services rendered to indigent mothers
in confinement.
Dental Clinic.
A dental clinic exists at the Cobourg School for Mothers,
Kempshead Hall, Kempshead Road, to which expectant and nursing
mothers may be referred who are in need of treatment.
Many mothers from the Municipal Centres have been sent for
treatment during the year, and it is only fitting to acknowledge
the public-spirited action of the authorities of the School for readily
accepting any case sent by other Infant Welfare Centres in the
Borough, thus co-operating in the all-important work of the care of
the teeth of the mother during and after pregnancy.
