previously acting temporarily, were appointed permanently as sanitary inspectors
on May 28th. Mr. J. B. Molloy, junior clerk, was appointed as
temporary sanitary inspector on October 22nd. Mr. Pottier resigned and
left the Council's service on 16th August. Miss M. Mackenzie, temporary
sanitary inspector, resigned and left on December 24th, 1919.
On the clerical staff Mr. Spokes returned from military service on February
14th, Mr. Cove on May 12th, and Mr. Mullis on July 28th. Of the
temporary clerks Miss H. M. Loder left on June 7th, Miss H. Henderson
on May 31st, land Miss M. Gardner on October 18th. Mr. L.
Higgins was appointed as temporary clerk on October 16th. On November
10th Mr. Spokes and Mr. Mullis were transferred to other departments, and
Mr. Carpenter, Mr. Knight and Mr. Crick came into the public health d partment.
The latter since that time has been away on sick leave. Mr. R. Capel,
boy clerk, left the department (by transfer) on November 17th, and Mr. S. Barker
was appointed in his place. Mr. T. H. Hague was appointed as temporary
clerk on December 1st.
Mrs. A. Oakey resigned her position as Matron of the Personal Cleansing
Station and left on May 3rd, 1919, Mrs. E. Mace being promoted to her
place.
It has unfortunately to be recorded that Mr. H. Jackson, caretaker of the
Goldington Buildings dwellings, met his death by accident on August 16th ;
Mr. J. H. Ambrose was appointed in his place on November 3rd.
CHEMICAL AND BACTERIOLOGICAL WORK.

The work done in 1919 was as follows:—

Examinations of sputum have also been made at the tuberculosis dispensaries
(see page 44).
Facilities for the examination of cerebrospinal fluid in suspected cases of
cerebospinal fever, etc., are available to the medical officer of health through
the London County Council laboratory, and for the examination of the blood
in suspected malaria through the Ministry of Health.
