Of the notified cases of scarlet fever, 537 (or 96-2 per cent.) were removed
to hospital, as follows :—

After-care work amongst discharged cases of scarlet fever similar to that
mentioned in the Annual Report for 1918 was continued during 1919.
Return Cases.—(Definition :—A case of scarlet fever occurring within 28
days of the return from hospital to the same house of a previous case of scarlet
fever). There were 13 such cases in 1919, occurring in 10 houses (there being
three houses in each of which there were two cases following the return of a
previous case from hospital). In 12 instances (9 houses) the return case or
cases was in the same family as the (?) infecting case, and in one case in a
different family in the same house. In five instances the (?) infecting case
had nasal discharge after return from hospital, in two other instances otorrhcea,
in one other instance a recurrence of scarlet fever, and in two cases no obvious
signs of infectiousness. The intervals between the return of the (?) infecting
case and the onset of the illness of the first or only return case were respectively
3, 3, 4, 5, 9, 10, 10, 14, 18 and 21 days. The second return cases
began 1, 4 and 10 days respectively after the first return cases.
There was, in addition, one case of scarlet fever occurring 33 days after the
