* N.B. —The birth-rate is calculated upon the special Borough population estimated for that purpose by the Registrar-General
for the year 1916, viz., 308,702, an estimate of the total population based on the assumption that the ratio between the
total and the civilian population is the same in the Borough of Lambeth as in England and Wales as a whole, the total population
of England and Wales for this purpose having been calculated by adding to the published estimate for 1914 the natural
increase up to the middle of the year 1916.
