REPORT OF THE PUBLIC ANALYST ON THE ANALYTICAL
WORK OF THE YEAR
Analytical Laboratory,
Town Hall, Paddington, W.
Reviewing the analytical work of the year we find that there were
analysed: milk, 286 samples, general groceries, 70; butter, 44;
lard, 44; margarine, 37; cheese, 14; flour, 3; cream, 2; drugs, 2 ;
and sausages, 2. A total of 504 samples. Of all of these there proved
to be adulterated only 5 samples, all of which were milk. Taking all
the samples together, less than 1 per cent. were found to be adulterated,
the actual percentage being 0.99. This is the lowest percentage for
any year during which I have been your analyst. For the previous
year, 1918, the adulterated samples reached 2½ per cent.
The Borough is particularly fortunate in its food supply. I do not
think there is another Borough in London that so consistently maintains
the-purity of its articles.
Apparently it is the higher prices paid this year for food that have
taken away the inducement for adulteration. No doubt the work of the
Food Control Committee has also contributed to this happy result.
I have the honour to remain,
Yours obediently,
ALF. W. STOKES,
Public Analyst.
