The number of deaths under one year per 1,000 births was 76.0,
as compared with the rate of 72.0 in 1914. This rate is calculated
upon the total number of births belonging to Hampstead, including
those that occurred in Lying.in Institutions outside the Borough. The
average rate for the years 1910.1915 was 68.9.
Deaths among Legitimate and Illegitimate Infants.
The death rate among illegitimate children is a matter of great
difficulty to deal with. Illegitimate children seldom receive the same
maternal care that is bestowed upon legitimate children, and that they
should be looked after as well as circumstances will permit is important
and to ensure this, special attention is now being given to all illegitimate
births which come under our notice.

I have prepared the following figures to show the great difference that exists in the infantile death-rates of legitimate and illegitimate children under one year of age.
