The patient was removed to the Port Sanitary Hospital. The contacts with
patients were also taken to hospital and bathed, and their bedding and clothing
disinfected. The infected quarters on the vessels were disinfected, and thirteen
of the crew vaccinated.
The s.s. "Hawnby," of Stockton, official number 99,725, from Salonica,
arrived at Gravesend on the 13 th October, and reported a case of small-pox on
board. The vessel left Solonica on 24th September, and the patient who was
on shore in that port, was taken ill on the third October, the rash appearing
on the 6th October.
The patient was removed to the Port Sanitary Hospital, where he
subsequently died. The person who was in attendance upon the patient on
the vessel, was also removed to hospital for observation.
The necessary disinfection of the vessel and effects was carried out.
