The death rates for pulmonary and other forms of tuberculosis in 1909 were lower than in any
of the preceding eleven years shown in the table.
PHTHISIS.
Pulmonary phthisis, or consumption, caused 168 deaths, the death rate being 0'93 per 1,000.
From 1898 to 1906 the death rate fluctuated but showed no marked downward tendency. Since
January 1st, 1902, cases of consumption have been visited by the Council's lady sanitary inspectors,
who have given advice as to the precautions to be taken to prevent the spread of infection. The
work of educating the public by these means could hardly fail to produce results, as knowledge of
the treatment and prevention of consumption became more widely spread, and after five years the
death rate suddenly fell from 119 per 100,000 in 1906 to 96 in the year 1907. For the past three
years the rate has now been less than 101 as compared with rates varying between 111 and 132 in
the years 1898 to 1906.
The following table shows the death rates and the number of deaths in North and South
Kensington respectively.
