Cowhouses. The four cowhouses in the Borough have
been visited on 13 occasions, and the required cleansing
has been duly enforced on 12 occasions.
Horse Slaughterer. The one horse-slaughtering
house in the Borough has been visited by the Inspector
on 19 occasions, and cleansing of the premises was required
on 3 of these visits.
During the year these premises have been entirely rebuilt
and remodelled, in accordance with the recent requirements
of the London County Council, so that now
the whole of the operations carried out in these premises
are carried out within enclosed chambers, the offensive
smell and fumes from which are conducted by means of
flues over a coke furnace and into a shaft before emission
to the outer atmosphere. Personally I am somewhat
dubious as to the advantages likely to be derived from
this very considerable outlay, because from our experience
of the old premises really bona fide complaints of objectionable
smells arising therefrom were very seldom
found to exist, but at any rate these premises now comply
with the requirements of the London County Council
By-laws, and undoubtedly the previous premises did not.
It however remains to be seen what effect these considerable
alterations have upon the emanations from these
premises into the surrounding neighbourhood.
Other Scheduled Offensive Trades. The 63
other premises where these offensive trades are carried on
notably within the precincts of the Foreign Animals'
Wharf, Deptford, have been frequently visited, and the
requirements of this Authority have always immediately
received attention.
