various others, including workplaces, such as 4 blacksmiths,
13 barge builders, 4 builders' yards, etc. Information
has been sent to H.M. Inspector of Factories with
respect to 4 new workshops, and also 3 instances where
protected persons were employed on premises no abstract
being displayed. One complaint has been received from
H.M. Inspector and also 8 intimations respecting alleged
new workshops; of these 8 however, only 4 were really
new premises, the other 4 relating to premises which had
already been notified by us to H.M. Inspector.
The inspections have revealed the presence of defects
or insanitary conditions requiring the service of many
verbal, and in addition, 40 written notices, 30 of these
being in respect of workshops, including workshop laundries,
and 16 in respect of work-places. The notices
had reference to want of cleanliness generally in 62
cases, want of ventilation in 2 cases, unsuitable or defective
sanitary accommodation 12 cases, and other nuisances
23 cases, also for Breach of Special Sanitary
Requirements for Bakehouses in 10 cases. These defects
have all been attended to.
Outworkers' Registers. Seventy-three lists of Outworkers,
containing 27 7 names and addresses, have been
received during the year from Medical Officers of Health
for other Districts; 26 lists, containing 200 names, have
been received from employers within the District; 29
lists, containing 70 names, have been forwarded to other
Districts, thus giving a total of 40 7 names and addresses
of outworkers within the Borough. Two hundred
and ninety-seven visits of inspection have been made to
these premises, and insanitary conditions, mainly want of
cleanliness have been revealed in 25 instances; 25 written
notices were served with respect to these matters.
