Typhoid Fever. There were 19 cases of Typhoid
Fever notified during the year, 7 being in East Greenwich,
8 in West Greenwich, 2 in St. Nicholas, and 2 in
Charlton. The ages of the patients were: 1 between one
and five years, 5 between five and fifteen years, 7 between
fifteen and twenty-five years, and 6 between twentyfive
and sixty-five years. Of the total number of cases,
17 were removed to the Hospital for treatment. Twentyeight
such cases occurred in 1909, and 34 in 1908;
the average number for the years 1901 to 1909 inclusive,
being 42.
Of the total number removed to the Hospital for treatment
1 case, however, was returned, as in the opinion
of the Medical Superintendent not suffering from Typhoid
Fever, the disease from which the patient was considered
to be suffering not being stated.
There were 3 fatalities from this disease during the
year, 1 belonging to East Greenwich, 1 to West Greenwich,
and 1 to Charlton.
Twenty-three specimens were forwarded for bacteriological
examination from cases suspected to be Typhoid
Fever in character, and of this number 16 gave a negative
result, and 7 were positive in character.
During this year an interesting investigation has been
conducted by one of the Medical Inspectors of the Local
Government Board into the question as to the number of
typhoid carrier cases in London. In connection with
this investigation arrangements were made for the bacteriological
examination of specimens of the dejecta at
monthly intervals for a period of six months after their
discharge from the Hospital as recovered from an attack
of Typhoid Fever, and under the scheme investigations
have been carried out with 13 patients; one of these
