ANNUAL REPORT
OF THE
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH
For 1911.
Section I.—STATISTICAL.
POPULATION OF CHELSEA.
The census population of the Borough of Chelsea for the year 1911
was 66,404, the census of 1901 showing a population of 73,842, so that
there has been a decline in population in the 10 years of 7,438 persons.
With few exceptions all the more centrally situated Boroughs of London
show similar decreases. The reason of these decreases appears to be
the movement of population out from the central districts to the suburbs
following upon the improved facilities for travel and the building
developments in the suburban areas, and the removal of industries
formerly situated in Central London to extra-metropolitan situations.
In Chelsea these general causes of exodus of population have been
intensified by the demolition of small houses following upon the lapsing
of leasehold interests, and the slow rate of progress made in the utilisation
of land rendered vacant by demolitions.
The estimated population of the Borough for the middle of the
year 1911 is 66,228. As the Census Report for London is not yet
issued, the population of North and South Chelsea and of the five wards
of the Borough cannot at present be stated.
