quarter of the year, one in the second, 3 in the third, and 2 in the fourth
quarter. In North Chelsea 4 cases were notified, and in South Chelsea
3 cases.
Of the 7 cases notified two were mistaken diagnoses, one suffering
only from senility without definite disease being assigned as the cause
of death, which occurred subsequent to removal to hospital. The other
was a case of appendicitis, which was retained in hospital for 19 days.
Of the remaining 5 cases, in two the infection was contracted outside
the Borough—one case returning ill from Singapore, and the other
having contracted the disease by eating infected mussels at Ramsgate.
Of the remaining 3 cases, two were on the staff of the Victoria Hospital
for children, the illnesses commencing within a week of each other at
the end of October. One patient was a ward nurse and the other an
out-patient sister. In neither case was it possible to trace any specific
source of infection. The remaining case was that of a student in St.
Mark's College, and occurred a month after the case which was notified
as enteric fever, but subsequently ascertained to be appendicitis, this
patient also being a student at St. Mark's. There were no blood
specimens sent to the Lister Institute in the course of the year for
determining the Widal reaction. The examinations of excreta of enteric
fever patients discharged from the M.A.B. hospitals, with a view to the
discovery of the B. Typhosus, were not pursued in 1911.
Removals to Hospital.—Table XV. exhibits the removals of
patients suffering from scarlet fever, diphtheria, and enteric fever, to the
M.A.B. and other hospitals, in each of the 22 years 1890—1911,
expressed as percentages of the total number of cases of each disease
notified.
