Report on the health of the Metropolitan Borough of Battersea for the year 1909

Of the total number (2933) of births notified during the year
1909, 1,110 have been visited by the Council's Health Visitors.
In addition 874 revisits have been made, and the Visitors of the
Health Society have in addition paid a considerable number of revisits
to births previously visited by the Council's Officers. The
districts in which these births have occurred have been specially
selected, and the following summary of the results of the enquiries
made into these 1,110 births are set out below.
The enquiries made had reference—
(a) As to the mothers: to health and occupation of; character
of the labour, whether a doctor or midwife in attendance;
condition of the house, and number of rooms occupied.
(b) As to the child: condition of health at birth, and nature
of food given.
(a) As to the mothers:—
In 187 cases the character of the labour was described as
"difficult."

In 526 instances a doctor was in attendance at the birth; in 483 cases the woman was attended by a midwife; in 65 cases an uncertified nurse or person was in attendance.
