THE SHELTER.
During the year 1910, there were only 34 persons admitted to
the Shelter whilst their homes were being disinfected. This total
consisted of 8 men, 9 women and 17 children. This shows
an increase of one person on the number admitted during 1909.
The cost of maintenance for the 34 persons admitted last year
was £3 17s. 0d. The average duration of stay in the shelter was
1.5 days.
The table on page gives further particulars relating to
these contacts. No expenses were incurred in the conveyance of
persons to and from the shelter during last year.
CLEANSING OF PERSONS ACT, 1897.
The facilities afforded by the Borough Council under the above
Act for the cleansing of verminous persons were taken advantage
of during 1910 by 568 persons who presented themselves at the
station for cleansing.

The following shows the number of baths given to persons affected with vermin since the baths were instituted:—

Of the total 568 baths given, 106 were sulphur baths for scabies
and 462 for pediculi.
Amongst the number presenting themselves for baths, the
great majority were children from the public elementary schools.
They amounted to a total of 352, a considerable decline upon the
number of children cleansed during 1909.
