During the early months of 1910. I was able to make use of
voluntary Health Visitors to visit mothers of newly-born infants
for the purpose of giving advice on the care and nurture of their
infants. The number of such visits made was 197, of which 122
were primary, and 75 were secondary visits. At each first visit a
printed leaflet of advice on the care and feeding of infants was left
with the mother. In October of the same year the Borough
Council appointed a Health Visitor under Section 6 of the London
County Council's General Powers Act, 1908. The Health Visitor
(Mrs. C. Brown) began her duties on the 21st of November. From
that time to the 31st December she made 137 visits to nursing
mothers in the Borough. Of these 125 were primary visits and 12
were revisits.
The duties of Health Visitors are defined in the Health Visitors
(London) Order, 1909.
Of the total infantile deaths 34 were due to diarrhoeal complaints,
98 to premature birth, 29 to congenital defects, 117
to those indefinite causes included under the terms, atrophy,
debility, marasmus, 22 to tuberculous diseases, 38 to convulsions,
86 to lung diseases and 11 to overlying.
Senile Mortality.—The deaths which occurred in the Borough

between the ages of 65 and 75 years, 291 between the ages of 75
and 85 years, and 94 were at the ages of 85 years and upwards.
The annual mortality rate of persons of 65 years and upwards is
2.4 per 1,000 persons living.
Deaths in Public Institutions.—There were 1,278 deaths in
public institutions in the Borough during 1910 ; of these 506 were
residents of other districts, and the remaining 772 were residents
of Hackney.
The following lists give the institutions within the Borough,
receiving persons both from and without the Borough, and also
