MISS BROWN'S REPORT.
Town Hall,
Islington,
April 7th, 1906.
sir,
I beg to submit to you a report of the work done during the year 1905 in connection
with the workplaces where women are employed.
During the year 1,619 premises, comprising 1,933 workrooms, were inspected, and 1,403
re-inspections and calls made.
The inspections are as follows :β
Registered Workshops and Laundries | 884
Premises of Outworkers | 661
Restaurant Kitchens | 39
Miscellaneous | 35 | |
Total | 1,619 |
Workshops.βAt the end of the year there were on the register of Workshops where women
are employed 996 workplaces containing 1,731 workrooms. This is a reduction of 44 work
places, as 129 have been added during the year, while 173 have been removed. The reduction
in the number of Workshops is accounted for by depression of trade, which has destroyed
some of the smaller Workshops. Many of the Workshops visited were working with reduced
numbers owing to the same cause, or were employing occasional Outworkers instead of a
regular indoor staff.
The names and addresses of 100 Workshops or Laundries where the occupiers had failed
to affix an Abstract of the Factory Act were forwarded to H.M. Inspector for the district.
The following is a list of trades carried on in the various workplaces :β
Industry. | Number of Workshops. | Number of Workrooms. |
