These figures show that a change has gradually been coming over the
distribution of the ages of the population, as in 1891 there were—
118 under 5 years of age.

No doubt there is some tendency to-day for the population to decrease in
its younger years of life and to increase in its later, which has been brought
about by the steady decrease in the" birth rate.
The estimated population of the borough at the middle of the year was
342,994 persons, of whom 163,066 were males and 179,928 were females. Of
this number 36,873 were below 5 years of age, while 60,355 were between 5 and
15 years; 68,260 between 15 and 25; 62,473 between 25 and 35; 44,675 between
35 and 45, while 67,358 were above this last mentioned age. It is estimated also
that there were 92,489 women living in the Borough at a child-bearing age, viz.,
between 15 and 45 years old. This fact is of importance in considering the
birth rate.
Population of the Sub-Registration Districts. —The population of the several sub-registration districts has been estimated at the middle of the year as follows:—
