REPORT
OF THE
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH
For the Year 1908.
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors.
Sir and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to present to you the Annual Report on the
vital statistics and sanitary work for the 53 weeks ending January
2nd, 1909.
POPULATION.
The population of the Metropolitan Borough of Deptford was
estimated at 117,539 at the middle of the year 1908.
BIRTHS.
During the 53 weeks ending the 2nd January, 1909, 3,084 births
1,563 males and 1521 females) were registered, compared with 3,323
in 1907, 3,260 in 1906 and 3,290 in 1905.
The birth-rate for the Borough was equivalent to an annual rate
of 26.2 per 1,000 of the population as compared wite 28.5 for 1907,
28.2 for 1906, and 28.7 for 1905, with an average of 29.7 per 1,000
for the past ten years.
The birth-rate for London was 25.2 per 1,000, compared with
25.8 for 1907, 26.7 for 1906, and 27.1 for 1905, with an average of
28.1 for the past ten years.
The birth-rate for England and Wales was 26.5 per 1,000, in the
76 great towns 27.0, and that in the 142 smaller towns 26.0 per 1,000.

The subjoined table gives the number of births which occurred in each Ward, also the birth-rate in each Ward. (See also Table 6).
