Honorary Medical Officers at the consultations held at 92,
Greyhound Road, who made 2,287 attendances, as compared
with 255 babies registered, with 1,041 attendances, in 1909.
The notable increase in the number of attendances is especially
gratifying, showing, as it does, the anxiety of the
mothers for the welfare of their babies, and their appreciation
of the advice given. The school, too, undertakes a considerable
amount of home visiting, as it is necessary to
supplement the advice given by the doctors at the consultations
by practical demonstrations at the homes, and the Committee
report that the good results of the visits by the Superintendent
of the School are seen in the improved conditions
of the homes and more intelligent methods of domestic
economy.
Dinners are provided at the school for nursing and expectant
mothers, when recommended by the doctors, at a
charge of 2d. a meal, which is just under the actual cost of
the food, and in 1910 3,750 were supplied, and the Medical
Officers emphasise the satisfactory results obtained by thus
nourishing the child through the mother.
Deaths of Illegitimate Infants.
Of the children who died before attaining the age of one
year, 48 were illegitimate, the mortality among them being
in the proportion of 281 deaths per 1,000 births, against 102
per 1,000 among children born in wedlock.
The following table gives the causes of death among the
illegitimates:-
