Diphtheria and Membranous Croup.
The number of cases notified in 1908 was 55 as compared with
103 in 1907, the attack-rate or number of cases notified per 1,000
population being 0.59. The number of fatal cases was 5, or 9.1 par
cent. of the cases notified. The death-rate per 1,000 population
was 0.05; 44 patients, or 80 per cent. of the total cases notified,
were removed to hospital.
A thorough examination was made of the sanitary condition
of every house in which a case of diphtheria occurred, and the
following defects were discovered:—
