BIRTHS.
The births of 8,890 children, of whom 4,453 were males and 4,437 females,
were registered. These are equal to an annual birth-rate of 26.06 per 1000,
which is the lowest birth-rate recorded in the last twenty-eight years, and
probably the lowest which has been known since 1843.
An examination of the figures given on the next page will in this connection
repay perusal.
