SCARLET FEVER.
There were 1,074 cases notified, or as many as 677 below the corrected
average of the preceding nine years. This is the lowest return, with the exception
of that of 1891, that has been previously notified. It is, indeed, an extraordinary
large decrease, and one that it is very difficult to account for. It is 420 below the
number recorded in the preceding year.
The case rate was 3.05 per 1,000 inhabitants, and was 1.92 below the mean
rate that obtained from 1891 to 1899. The disease was unusually dormant during
the first three quarters, the cases being respectively 222, 210 and 236. As the
fourth quarter advanced, however, it became more prevalent, and the number at
its close reached 406.

In London the case-rate was 7·68 per 1,000, and in the Encircling Districts 7·47 The notifications in the preceding years have been as follows:-
