INSPECTOR JORDAN'S REPORT.
Public Health Department,
Town Hall, Upper Street, N.,
January, 1901.
To A. E. Harris, Esq.,
Medical Officer of Health,
Dear Sir,
I have much pleasure in submitting my report to you of the works carried out during the
year 1900 under my supervision, in accordance with section 94 of the Public Health (London) Act
1891, in respect to houses let in lodgings or occupied by members of more than one family. There
are now 405 houses in my district—of course there is not much variety in the work—and the people
do not yet seem to be any more cleanly or careful in their habits, yet I continue to extol the virtues
of those two best disinfectants—fresh air and clean water.
In March I served an intimation notice at each house, addressed to the landlord, calling
attention to the annual cleansing in April, and during the year 438 intimation notices were served
for the abatement of nuisances at the various premises.
There were 19 prosecutions, two summonses were withdrawn on payments of 23s. costs, and the
other 17 resulted in fines amounting to £22 2s. and costs £3 12s.
During the year I have made 4,653 inspections and 1,511 re-inspections and calls, and have had
1,856 improvements carried out at 948 premises, the tabulated statement attached hereto show the
details under their respective headings.
Thirty houses were placed on the Register in my district during 1900 and one taken off the list
in that part of the Borough under my supervision.
I am, Sir, your respectfully,
JAMES J. JORDAN,
Inspector of Houses let in Lodgings.
