The estimate of the population has been calculated on the basis of the Census
returns of 1891 and 1896. It is impossible to assert positively that it is accurate,
but it can hardly be supposed that any vital error can be made in so short a period
as five years, the length of time that has elapsed since the last census was taken.
In 1891 it was ascertained that in every 1,000 of the population,
118 were under 5 years of age.
206 were between 5 years and 15 years.

From these figures it has been calculated that the ages of the population at
the several periods of life were as given in the subsequent statement.
