In my report for the year 1903, I stated that the Borough
Council had appointed an officer for the sole duty of inspecting
and dealing with any insanitary conditions met with in home work
places. Miss Newton was appointed for this purpose on the 14th
April, and commenced her duties on the 2nd May, 1904. From
this latter date up to the end of the year Miss Newton had
inspected 766 homeworkers' premises. Her instructions are not only
to inspect the workrooms themselves, but also to ascertain the
sufficiency or otherwise of the sanitary conveniences on the premises.
The following table prepared by this officer shows in detail the
nuisances found and the work executed under her supervision up
to the end of the vear:—
OUTWORKERS' PREMISES AND DOMESTIC WORKSHOPS, MAY TO DECEMBER, 1904.
Outworkers' Premises inspected | 611 |
Domestic Workshops ,, | 157 |
