the number of 87. Diphtheria bacilli were found in 27 cases, but the
examination of the remaining 60 yielded negative results.
Typhoid or Enteric Fever.—During the year under consideration
185 cases of typhoid or enteric fever were notified in the district. Of
these 10 were subsequently found not to be cases of that disease, thus
leaving a total of 175 genuine cases. This gives an attack rate of .77

rate for the previous year 1903, when the number notified was 247 and
the attack rate was equal to l.l per 1,000 living.
The incidence of the disease was very low during the first seven months
of the year. A rise then took place in the second week of August,
which was maintained, with slight fluctuations, until the first week iu
October, when it fell to a point little above the average for the year.
A slight rise occurred in the third week of November and the third week
in December, after which the notifications gradually fell to zero.

The following table shows the distribution of the cases in the four sub districts of the Borough, with the attack rate per 1,000 persons living.
