MEASLES.
As measles is not a notifiable disease it is impossible to form
a correct idea of the extent of an outbreak, except by means of
the death returns and school certificates. On information of the
existence of a case of measles in a house, the Inspector calls and
leaves printed instructions as to the provisions of the "Order"
relating to the exposure of infected persons, clothing, &c. with
the parent or the person responsible for the care of the patient.
He also sees the premises, clothing, *&c. are properly disinfected.
Leaflets have been freely distributed as to the treatment and
management of measles.
Information was received during the year of 600 cases, and
the number of deaths registered was 16, as compared with 72,
58, and 46 for the three previous years.
Of the 16 deaths 14 were under five years of age, including
5 under one year.
The mortality was equal to a rate of 0.13 per 1,000 persons
living, that for England and Wales was 0.32, for the 75 great
towns 0.40, for the 141 smaller towns 0.31, and for London as
a whole 0.37.
