The whole of the cases were strictly isolated or taken to the
hospital, otherwise the outbreak would have been very serious. A
more careful enquiry elicited the fact that one of the children was
ill on the day of the excursion, and on arrival at the tea-gardens
was wrapped and laid on a sofa. Four or five days afterwards this
child sickened with obscure symptoms of typhoid, although the
medical attendant would not certify that it was typhoid. I think
this fully explains the outbreak.
Having now briefly discussed the alterations in death rates
owing to population having been calculated at too high a number,
I propose, after making calculations for past years, to discuss the
rates for the year 1890.
