The total number of scarlet fever cases removed during the
year was 562 from Hackney; 717 from Islington; 375 from
Shoreditch; 552 from Bethnal Green; and 575 from Poplar.
Of diphtheria, 386 were removed from Hackney; 469 from
Islington; 230 from Shoreditch; 279 from Bethnal Green; and
441 from Poplar. Of typhoid, the largest number was removed
from Hackney, viz., 244; then 179 from Islington; 112 from
Shoreditch; 145 from Bethnal Green; and 183 from Poplar.
These figures show that Hackney in 1891 did not suffer more, as
is often asserted, from infectious diseases, than the adjoining
parishes.
