I worked out the relative value of deaths at different ages in
my last annual report, and showed that the number of deaths at a
particular age is of comparatively little value by itself, and that it
is only when compared with the number of the population living
at different age.periods that they become useful. To a certain
extent, however, they are of value for purposes of comparison,
and the table shows that compared with former years the
number of deaths of infants under 1 year to total deaths was
unusually small during the year. The same remark applies
