Uncertified Deaths.
Again in 1896 every death was certified either by the
medical attendant or by the Coroner.
In London, of the 208,534 deaths registered during
the year, 3,147, or 1.5 per cent., were not certified.
In England and "Wales there were 11,464 cases, or 2.2
per cent., in which the causes were not certified.
Deaths in Public Institutions
(within the District).
1.—The Workhouse, Endell Street.

The number of deaths which occurred during the year amongst the inmates was:—

against 137, 141, and 147 in the three preceding years.
In 1896 the average number of inmates was 543, and
the annual death-rate was 19.8 per 1,000.
The average rate for five years 1891-95 was 27.8 per
1,000.
In addition to the deaths at the Workhouse there were
67 deaths of parishioners at the Central Sick Asylum,
Cleveland Street, who were removed there for medical
treatment.
The number of infectious cases notified was 25, all
from erysipelas.
