The 408 marriages in 1896, compared with 341, 369,
and 371 in the preceding three years respectively, show a
considerable increase. The marriage-rate was equal to
21.3 per 1,000, a rate of 5.1 per 1,000 higher than that of
the decennial average. 229 of the marriages were
celebrated at the Established Churches, 21 at the
Roman Catholic Chapel, 21 at other Nonconformist
places of worship, and 137 at the SuperintendentRegistrar's
office.
