A loan was obtained from the London County Council
for the sum of £5,000 to defray the first cost of the
stables establishment.
Three horses were placed in the stable on the 10th
of January, 1895, and the last horse, completing the
stud of 20, on the 28th February. Some trouble has
been experienced with the horses suffering from colds
and sickness, which is partly to be accounted for by
receiving young horses, unaccustomed to London work,
direct from farms in the country, and also by putting
them into new stables during exceptionally severe
weather. The whole of the stud is now in good healthy
working condition.
During the year previous to the purchase of horses,
the average number supplied by the contractor for horse
hire, was 30 per day. In addition to this number the
barge work is done by hired horses, requiring an
average of 5 horses per day.
