Report of the health of Tottenham for the year 1893

Pulmonary Diseases.
Diseases of the Respiratory Organs caused 260 deaths, against
272 in 1892, and 257 in 1891.
Phthisis.
The deaths from Phthisis amounted to 67, .against 79 in 1892,
and 86 in 1891.
Diseases of the Circulatory System.
Under this head 50 deaths were registered.
Violent Deaths.
Different forms of violence caused 33 deaths.
Of these 11 were referred to burns and scalds, 4 to drowning, 4
to suffocation, 4 to falls, 5 to shock, 2 to poison, 1 to being run over
by railway train, 1 to cut throat, and 1 to blow from a ball.
Sanitary Proceedings.
The past year has been marked by a most thorough and
systematic inspection of houses in the District, especially where notices
have been received of the existence of infectious disease.
At each house careful enquiries are made as to overcrowding,
infectious disease, or nuisance of any kind; there is also a careful
examination of traps, closets, and cisterns, the drains being examined
by the smoke test.
It will be seen on referring to the Summary of Nuisances, and
other matters reported and attended to by the Sanitary Inspector and
his assistants, that a great deal of work has been carried out during
the year.
2,485 notices were served for the abatement of nuisances, 1,023
drains were examined and tested for defects, 1,704 visits were paid to
cases of infectious diseases, and 556 rooms were disinfected after cases
of contagious diseases.
There was periodical inspection of all Bake-houses, Slaughterhouses,
and Dairies. Special attention was given to all premises used
