THIRTY-NINTH ANNUAL REPORT
on
THE SANITARY CONDITION
of the
STRAND DISTRICT, LONDON.
TO THE STRAND DISTRICT BOARD OF WORKS.
Gentlemen,
The resident population of the District for the
year 1894 estimated on the same basis as explained in
my report for 1892, stands at 24,815, and is divided
among the three registration sub-districts thus:—
St. Anne 12,040
St. Mary 5,688
St. Clement 7,087
The above figures must only be taken as approximately
correct; as alterations in the character of each
parish are continually taking place. In the past the
Census has been taken once in ten years—the last in
1891, but consequent upon the passing of the "Equalisation
of Rates (London) Act," by which the RegistrarGeneral
is called upon to furnish annually estimates of
the populations of the various parishes of London, it has
been resolved that a Census must be taken every five
years, the first being in 1896. It is desirable in estimating
the populations for the division of rates that
allowance be made for the paupers and others belonging
to any parish who are living temporarily beyond
