It will be noticed that during the year Mr. Kelf inspected 1,332
Workshops; in 857 of them various insanitary defects were found,
and though some of the nuisances were abated on a verbal intimation,
yet it was found necessary to serve 763 notices and to re-visit each
of the defective Workshops three or four times before the notices
were obeyed. The summonses taken out against the occupiers of
Workshops who had failed to obey the notices within a reasonable
time numbered 38, but 21 of these were withdrawn on payment of
costs as the necessary works were completed before the day of
hearing.
Two summonses were dismissed, in one case with costs against
the Vestry. Details of these cases will be found under the head of
"Legal Proceedings."
In nine cases the Magistrates at Worship Street made orders for
the necessary work to be executed and for the costs to be paid to
the Vestry.
