alive 709 died before reaching the age of one year. This gives a
death rate, calculated upon the births of 152, while the corresponding
rate for the whole of London was 143.
The diseases most fatal to infants were :—

DEATHS OF YOUNG CHILDREN.
Nearly half the deaths (1,244, that is 47 per cent.) were those of
children aged less than five years. This gives a rate 68.3 calculated
upon the estimated population of young children.
OLD PERSONS' DEATH RATE.
The deaths of elderly persons, that is to say those over 65 years
of age, numbered 396. This gives a rate of 55.0 per thousand,
calculated on the estimated population of old persons.
