MATERNAL MORTALITY.
During 1946 there was one death from Puerperal Sepsis and
one from other causes directly connected with childbirth. These
deaths represent a death-rate of 0.56 per 1,000 total births as
compared with a rate for England and Wales of 1.24.

MATERNITY AND CHILD WELFARE
The five maternity and child welfare centres continued to
serve the Borough throughout the year, the only change being the
return on 1st July of the centre activities from Eton Manor
Club to the pre-war accommodation at Eton Mission, Eastway.
Reference was made in the Annual Report for the previous
year to the Borough's need of eight maternity and child
welfare centres, and further attention was given to this problem
during the year at several meetings of the Maternity and Child
Welfare Committee and steps were taken with a view to securing
sites needed for the fulfilment of the building programme. In view
of the impending transfer to the London County Council of
the Borough Council's maternity and child welfare powers and
responsibilities in accordance with the National Health Service Act,
1946, it will fall to the County Council to undertake the provision
of these premises and, in order to make the transfer as smooth as
possible and to obviate any unnecessary delay in this building
programme, the County Council has been given details of the
Borough Council's proposals, and consultations have taken place
between officers of the two authorities. These steps have been taken
to ensure that the needs of the Borough as regards the provision of
adequate and suitable premises for the maternity and child welfare
service will be suitably provided for in the scheme which the County
