Twenty-three cases were referred during 1935, and of these
twelve were found to have some early cardiac defect. It
was shown in last year's report that the detection of early
cardiac mischief should be encouraged, as the outlook for
such children is immeasurably better if treatment is instituted
before the disease has got far under way."
DIPHTHERIA IMMUNISATION,
(a) At Clinic.—The Clinic was continued on Tuesdays at
3 p.m. following the Infectious Disease Clinic. During the
early part of the year an additional session was held on Friday
afternoons. As in previous years, the practice has been to
Schick test children over five years of age, and only to
immunise those yielding a positive result. All children under
five years of age were immunised without a pre-Schick test.
Since February, Alum Precipitate'd Toxoid has been used
for all children under five years of age, and in Schick positive
children between five and eight years of age. One single dose
of 0.5 c.c. has been given by deep subcutaneous injection
into the left deltoid muscle.
Schick positive subjects over eight years of age have
been given three doses of 1.0 c.c. of Toxoid Antitoxin
Floccules.
Posterior Schick tests were done from one to three months
after the last injection of prophylactic. Schick control injections
were not used unless a positive result had been obtained
following the use of prophylactic.
