According to recent returns some 6,000 children received no
examination during 1960, compared with 7,138 last year.
At those schools visited 25,356 were inspected and 11,752
(46.3 per cent.) referred for treatment, compared with 26,145
inspected and 11, 829 (45. 2 per cent. ) referred in 1959.
As is customary at these inspections certain discrimination
is observed in the matter of selecting cases for treatment, and
the above figures should not therefore be regarded as an index
of the actual incidence of decay.

The results obtained from school inspections were as follows:-

Acceptance of Treatment39%
Refused Treatment47%
Forms Not Returned14%

Though recent returns show a slight increase in acceptance
for the year there has been a substantial decrease in the patronage
of school clinics since the introduction of free treatment
through the General Practitioner Service. Whilst this trend
has eased the burden in some areas, these gains have been largely
offset by the overall increases in the school population, and
existing variations in demand for treatment in other districts
have resulted in new administrative problems.
