The findings of a Working Party relating to a parallel experiment
by the Ministry, involving the topical application of
the above drug to the surfaces of the teeth, have confirmed the
fact that compared with the results obtained, this method was
too "time consuming" to warrant introduction on a major scale,
Because of fluctuations in staff no major developments have
been possible during the year, and attention has been principally
directed to a build up of services in areas of over average
acceptance. Despite the above handicaps overall coverage was
maintained at approximately the 1959 level.
Since the introduction of an additional surgery at the Overbury
Clinic the position at New Addington has shown substantial
improvement, and it is hoped that ability to carry out more frequent
inspection and treatment for these schools will have a
cumulative effect. The installation of X-Ray equipment, together
with "dark room" facilities recently added, are proving major
assets in the diagnosis of dental irregularities and other obscure
conditions in the mouth.
Waddon
Delays in the provision of new premises to replace those
vacated in Duppas Hill Lane have been a source of comment from
parents of younger children (in this district) who are unfortunately
compelled to travel some distance to obtain treatment,
After many set-backs a satisfactory site has now been secured
for a combined Welfare and Dental Centre to serve this growing
district, and it is hoped that present plans can be expedited to
allow building to be carried out during the coming financial
year.
To test their practical application new-type "turbine
dental engines have been installed in certain surgeries, and
despite minor "teething" troubles their arrival has been welcomed
by patients and dentists alike. Arrangements for the extension
of the new system to other clinics has now been planned.
Inspections
The number of children on the register at maintained schools
within the Borough at the close of 1960 was 36,653. Including
an additional 47 scholars at grant assisted schools this represents
a sum total of 36,700.
During the year 74.5 per cent, of the school population were
examined, compared with 76.4 per cent, in 1959. As previously
explained this decrease has come about as a result of staffing
fluctuations.
