TUBERCULOSIS.
The 1,135 "survivors 1911 " included 572 medically certified cases and 563 others. During
the past year there were added 397 cases which had been medically certified and 274 others;
so that the total of 1,806 cases on the Register during the year included 969 medically certified
cases and 837 others. The cases not medically certified as " consumptive " include a large
proportion of patients under treatment at the "Dispensary" as "suspects," of whom, past
experience teaches, a great many will ultimately be certified. Conservative estimates of the
proportions of "non-consumptives" in each class would give 10 per cent, of "errors" among
those already medically certified and 33 per cent, among the others. Making such allowances,
the known cases of consumption—excluding patients under private treatment—may be put at
1,430, or 1 per 1,000 of the total population, and 200 less than ten times the total deaths (163)
certified during the year as due to pulmonary tuberculosis. The latter estimate was put forward
in these reports some two or three years ago. The estimate of 1,430 living cases is almost
certainly too low, as a considerable number of consumptive patients were known to be under
institutional treatment during the past year, but had not been reported before the end of the
year.
