INSPECTION AND SUPERVISION OF FOOD.
Milk Supply.
Dairies and Milkshops.—The number of premises registered
under the provisions of the Milk and Dairies Order, 1926, is 144, and,
in addition, 149 retailers were registered for the sale of milk in
bottles or cartons, it being a condition that the milk is not to be sold
otherwise than in the closed and unopened receptacles in which it
was delivered to the premises.
The inspections of these premises during the year numbered
545.
Cowhouses.—There is now only one licensed cowhouse in the
Borough, and this was inspected eight times during the year.
Milk (Special Designations) Order, 1923.—Licences for the
production or sale of milk under the designations provided by the
above-named Order were issued for the year 1936 as follows : -

Bacteriological Examination of Milk.—Samples of milk for
bacteriological examination were taken as under : —
Pasteurised—24 samples, of which number 2 were found to contain
bacteria in excess of the 100,000 permitted by the Milk
(Special Designations) Order.
Certified—6 samples, all of which complied with the Order.
Grade A (Tuberculin Tested)—1 sample, which complied with
the Order.
Grade A (Pasteurised)—1 sample, which contained bacteria in
excess of the permitted number.
Four samples of milk (not graded) were submitted to the
animal innoculation test for tubercle and gave a negative result.
The Milk (Special Designations) Order, 1936.—This Order
came into force on June 1st, 1936. It revokes the Orders of 1923
and 1934, and abolishes the following designations : —
