Among the many and comprehensive aspects of home safety dealt with by the Committee,
mention may be made of the following practical issues which were taken up at the instigation
of the Committee:-
A suggestion was made for the production of lockable medicine cabinets or
compartments. This was pr ' on to the Royal Society for the Prevention of
Accidents and after consideration by the National Home Safety Committee a
request was made for the production of a British Standard for Medicine Cabinets.
?iinuiries into window cleaning facilities for aged and handicapped persons brought
confirmation from local offices of the National Assistance Board that tnis matter
would be sympathetically considered by their officers.
The London Master Builders' representative passed on the Home Safety Committee s
recommendations of the siting of electric socket outlets to the Registered
Housebuilders Committee, who expressed appreciation of the suggestions, and
stated that they were approaching the Ministry of Forks as to the issue of an
advisory leaflet.
The principal points from Mr. Butcher's talk on Planning Homer- for Safety were
passed, via the Public Health Committee, to the Housing Committee and to the
Council's Architect for consideration in the planning of future housing schemes
Dr. Harding reported that a leaflet, 'Look after your Oil Heater'' had been
produced by the London County Council for distribution to tenants and those concerned
with home welfare services, and assistance in further circulation was recue~ted
On the recommendation of the Home Safety Committee, the Public Health Committee
approved the circulation of this leaflet through the Puulic Health Department,
and willing co-operation was forthcoming from the Housing and Libraries Departments
of the Borough Council.
On the recommendation of the Home Safety Committee posters drawing attention to
the grave risks to children of drugs and other dangerous substances in the home
were forwarded to all family doctors in the borough for display in their waiting
rooms.
At the request of the Islington Trades Council (1953) 100 copies of a home
safety game for children, ''Watch Your Step ' were supplied for distribution
through the Trades Council and their ierresentative on the Home Safety Committee

As has been the practice in recent years, the Public Health Department cooperated with the
London County Council in the dissemination of publicity for this campaign. Some 4 500 leaflets
were distributed and about 40 posters put up on various sites available to the Council and a
further 100 posters were distributed for display in suitable shops for the particular subject
In addition all old people's clubs in the borough were written to and over 1,000 leaflets sent
for distribution to club members.
London Cornty Council Poliomyelitis Campaign
During the year the age limit for poliomyelitis vaccination was raised to 40 years and
the London County Council Divisional Medical Officer asked for the co-operation of the Public
Health Department in providing additional publicity. Arrangements were accordingly made by the
Department for the disposal of 150 leaflets and 12 posters through the usu 1 sites and offices
and the Chief Librarian arranged to distribute 3 000 bookmarks and 500 leaflets through the
Public Libraries
